Vonda Stanley's collection of early Australian bush poems
C J Dennis, 1876-1938
Clarence Michael James Dennis was born in Auburn South Australia.
After stints as a solicitor's clerk, journalist and working in the Broken Hill
mines, he produced a weekly Adelaide paper which floundered. An artist
friend took him to the mountain regions North of Melbourne where he settled at
Toolangi. It was there that his love of the bush began. He is most
famous for his work "The Sentimental Bloke." His work was extremely
popular because of his use of the Australian idiom in verse. On his death
he was dubbed "the Robert Burns" of Australian literature.
